TIPS T-learning to improve professional skills for intercultural dialogue (2007-2009)

A Multilateral project for development of innovation under the Leonardo da Vinci programme, initiated by Consorzio For.com, (Italy) in five countries: Austria, France, Greece, Italy and Poland, meant to develop a training programme for cultural mediators.

Presentation

The TIPS project offered a training course for cultural mediators based on t-learning. Skills and competences required by their profession is constantly changing to meet their public's demands, migrants, faced to very specific and individual problems. The main need concerns communication with migrants both for linguistic reason but also for overcoming negative issues (administrative barriers, cultural problem...)

Context

Cultural mediation is a professional activity which requires several skills, such as:communication and comprehension (especially inter personal effective communication is needed) ; relational abilities ; emotional balance ; planning abilities ; being able to face and to solve conflicts ; being able to promote self-esteem ; language literacy ; cultural and history background. Cultural mediators are a precious resource both for minority ethnic communities and for society as a whole. They are "culturally sensitive and competent services providers" more than just information or linguistic support providers. That is why competences and skills they have to master are so wide and could need to be adapted to very specific case to case situations. The cultural mediator founds job in public and private services where first contact services are offered: offices for foreigners, sanitary services, police departments, tribunals, prisons, association and cooperatives promoting socio-cultural integration projects. His role is also very important in sanitary structures (hospitals, first assistance bureau) where also new emergent branches of medical services are becoming aware of migrants specific needs.

Objectives

The main objective of the TIPS project was to realize a training course using t-learning methodology for cultural mediators and sanitary staff in order to improve skills and competences needed to work and to act with immigrants.

 Work plan

European meetings of experts (Roma, Krakow, Graz, Patras) ;

the innovative aspect of the proposal is the teaching methodology proposed which focuses on the use of ICT and T-learning in particular.
